Know the purpose of your website

Before searching for a web designer it's a good idea to know what you want your website to do for your business. It will help the designer to know your needs. These are some questions to ask yourself:

Do you want to generate leads?

Do you want to an online presence for your offline store?

Do you wish to sell products and/or services?

Do you want to interact with your customers?

Do you want to build long term relationships?

2. Experienced professional
There are many amateur designers who want to become professional. The problem is they don't have many years of experience. For example they may create a pretty design but don't know how to create search engine friendly pages. Look for a designer that has several years of experience, the more the better. Visit their website to see the portfolio of websites they have already designed.

3. Qualifications

By viewing their portfolio you have a good idea of the types of websites they have built, however some amateur designers will simply get a template, modify it a little then charge you for a complete design. A professional web designer should at least have these skill requirements:

html/xhtml

cascading style sheets (CSS)

javascript

graphic design

ecommerce design

php script installation and customization

search engine optimization

email marketing

FTP

Other design qualifications
CIW (Certified Internet Web Professional) is the world's leading Web technology certification and curriculum program. The Master CIW Designer Certification shows the designer has taken the time and made the investment to become a Master Designer. You can't go wrong if you find a designer that has been awarded this certification.

5. Testimonials

Reading the recommendations from clients shows these clients trust in the designer's services. Visit the designer's website to read the testimonials. Ask for them if you don't see them.

6. Pricing

This is going to be all over the map because it depends on the complexity of the work involved and who is doing it. An online store is containing 100s of products is going to cost more than a 5 page html website. A corporate design firm with many employees is going to charge more than a freelance web designer because they have to pay out salaries. Ask for a preliminary proposal from the designer before hiring him or her.

7. Ask for a contract

The contract should clearly state what's involved in the design of the website, prices, maintenance and hosting fees. It should also include who owns the website and the timetable for completion.

If your web designer fulfills all these requirements, is friendly, helpful, polite and easy to work then go for it. You have made an informed decision that you will be happy with.

Hire a professional web designer to build your website by visiting Professional Web Designer.

Herman Drost is a Master CIW Designer,
owner and author of: http://www.isitebuild.com/portfolio.htm

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Herman_Drost

Web Design Vs Flash Design

Let's find out the pros and cons for both web design and flash design, then decide which is the preferred or 'our recommended' choice of the two.

First let's set a case study. We're looking to build a website for an artist and he has outlined a few goals for us to keep in mind. He wants his to be...

Very attractively designed
Both web and flash design can easily achieve this. We often use a combination of the two to create maximum appeal for our clients websites. Ultimately we would suggest that Flash is much easier to use when designing a creative structure.

Search engine friendly
Unfortunately Flash has zero scope for search engine optimisation. Flash is inserted as a.swf file and any text contained within the flash file cannot be read by search engines. Website design uses html which is perfect for optimising a website. Search engines such as Google and Yahoo! can read all of your html which will contain your content rich text.

Easily editable for frequent updates
Again you are very limited with Flash, if you would like to update your website regularly. You would require flash knowledge and access to a Flash program, as well as the Flash files. If your website was built using standard web design then your website designer could easily include editable sections and set up a special program so that you can edit and change your website without worrying about breaking it!

Interactive for the user
This is where Flash can really shine! User interaction can be taken to the maximum from use of simple web forms to full on games. Website design can also offer ample user interaction functionality but not quite to the standard of Flash.

So Web Design or Flash Design?
Well from the case study above we would recommend using web/html design as it offers everything Flash has to give plus much more. Search engine optimisation is very important for the long run so its not a good idea to neglect it. Web design also provides control for the client so that they can make their own updates without having to go back to the website design company.

You can find out more about web design online or on our website. In fact, they couldn't be further from the truth - professional design and web design in particular is a very in-depth subject - from colour palettes through to usability, companies spend millions of pounds every year on web design and corporate identity - Learn from the big boys, take a look at the leaders in your field, what are they doing?

Don't copy their sites, but just take a look and see what is commonly done - a lot can be learnt from studying your opposition - and always remember, when it comes to design - KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid!!) - Less really is more, don't go building your site with 20 different typestyles - stick to one or two, it really will look better and plain fonts such as Arial look more modern than fonts with serifs such as Times - Take a look at Apple's website, it really couldn't be any simpler in design - but it looks and works great.

2. Let Google read your text - Whether your building your site with a program such as FrontPage, Mr Site, Dreamweaver or having a go at programming raw HTML with a text editor, don't be tempted to take the easy route, especially when it comes to putting your text in - years ago it was quite common for sites (even professionally built ones) to be completely built in programs such as Flash or to be built using pages of graphics, sliced up and positioned on screen in tables.

The reason people did this? - One reason was for ease, design the pages in a graphics program such as Photoshop then just cut and paste the images into a webpage. Another reason was for consistency - put your text content in your webpage as graphics and hey presto, everyone will see the same layout, same font style etc..

Why should you not do this? - Well for a start, slower loading pages (because of all the graphics) but more importantly, Search Engines such as Google need text on web pages to index from - put it all in as graphics and your site is pretty much invisible to Google.

3. Content is King - Google, Google, Google - I hear it all day long, but people are right, Google can make or break businesses - Get a site working well with Google and this time next year you could be a Millionaire...

Joking aside, Google is very important, getting your pages nearer the top for prime searches can make a difference of hundreds of website hits per month (or even in a day!!), but a great looking site doesn't mean a great ranking site - The saying "Content is King" is smack on, Google loves content - a good trick for building a site on a real budget, that can be ranked well is to just set up a free blog on a system such as Blogger, buy a cheap domain name, point it to your blog home page, then fill your blog with relevant content.

4. Test and Measure - Several years ago I worked with a business consultant who analysed everything and I mean everything within businesses and then he helped to make improvements - all he ever said was "Test and Measure, Test and Measure" - "how can you improve something if you don't know how it performs already?".

I have a lot of people who come to me and want to improve hits and traffic on their website, when I ask them how many hits do you currently receive a month?, I generally just get blank looks back, then most of them reply - "we don't know".

From day one of your site going live, add an analytics system to your website - some hosting companies will include this in their hosting package - to use these systems just log into your hosting control panel and look for analytics or statistics, if you do not have this you can use a system such as Google Analytics (Which I personally prefer) - just type Google Analytics into Google, click the link and follow the instructions - once signed up you will need to paste a bit of HTML code into all of the web pages you want to track, you can do this by opening the pages in a text editor such as Notepad.

Once installed you will be able to view a multitude of data - such as how many people are visiting your site every day, where they are coming from, what pages they are looking at etc, etc...

This is one of the most important elements of a website - if something you are doing on a certain page is attracting more attention, then do more of it, if something on a page seems to be turning your customers away, then change it and quick.

5. Website Hosting and Free Hosting - Another website element is hosting, web hosting is the location your website sits on the internet - like a hard drive that everybody can see. This is an annual charge and although generally it isn't that expensive, it is still another cost when setting up on a budget.

Now I would always recommend purchasing a proper hosting package from a reputable company, but if you're on a real budget many companies offer free hosting - The downside of this is they generally want you to add their advertisements to your site, but if you're starting out, it is a great way to get going - just type 'free web hosting' into Google and take your pick, however, as soon as your budget allows I would recommend switching to your own purchased package.

The downsides of free hosting are that they generally are not as reliable as purchased packages and the added advertisements will cheapen the look of your site and branding.

As I suggested at the start of this article, Doing It Yourself can often do more harm than good - Many people can be reluctant to contact a web design company in fear of huge prices and constant pestering once the initial contact is made - However professional web design packages can start from as little as two hundred pounds, and many web design companies such as Pinkmango are happy to provide free estimates and advice with no pestering or hassle.

Simon O'Carroll has over 10 years experience in web design and 20 years experience in marketing and branding for many blue chip clients such as BMW, Land Rover and Jaguar. You would like to create your own site but have no idea where to start. Html? Photoshop? Fireworks? FrontPage? Dreamweaver?

This article will give you some tips and hints on how to get started with web design - and which shortcuts to take!

Tip 1: Learn HTML

I can hear you groan. I said I was going to give you some shortcuts, now I suggest you learn HTML! Unfortunately there is no way around it. Even if you make use to the shortcuts to web design that I am going to suggest, learning HTML will still be the best investment that you can make. It is really not that difficult and it will greatly aid in your understanding of web design.

A really good place for online tutorials on HTML can be found here: http://www.w3schools.com/html/

Depending on your enthusiasm and level of technical skill I would also suggest that you learn a bit about CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Cascading style sheets can assist you tremendously with controlling the layout, colors and images on your web page. You can also find good CSS tutorials on the w3schools website.

Tip 2: Use a web template for web design

Now this is really a shortcut to web design! I suggest that you create your first website by making use of a web template. There are lots of commercial templates available, and frankly, they are beautiful, but I am going to give you some hints on where to find free web templates. Most people would think that searching for 'free web templates' in Google would be the most obvious way of doing it - but I suggest that you rather search for 'open source web templates'.

Here are some sources with open source (basically - free to use) web templates. The advantage of these templates is that they are normally well designed and will also teach you good web design principles (as opposed to most of the commercial templates which, while they are undeniably beautiful to look at, they are normally not built making use of good web design principles).

My favorite Open Source web design site is http://www.oswd.org
This site has over a 1600 free designs to choose from. Download any design and build your site! Most of these designs make use of CSS as well which is why it is a good idea to learn CSS.

Another site with lots of free template designs is http://www.daydreamgraphics.com
I suggest that if you are just starting out you stick with the designs made with tables. These are the easiest to manipulate and use. The templates on Daydreamgraphics are not for everyone - they are mostly geared towards a young funky look, so if you are looking for a design that you can use for your business or company, you might do better to rather select a design from OSWD, but if you are looking at setting up a personal website, a hobby site or a site related to music or entertainment, these designs will work very well.

Tip 3: Use Wordpress or Joomla to create your site

This option is really by far the best way to create your website in the long term. Theoretically you do not need to know HTML and CSS to create and modify your site but in practice it pays off to learn these skills since it will help you master these tools just so much faster.

The steps to creating your website using these tools are as follows:

1. Log into your CPanel control panel (if you are not using a host that provides you with a CPanel control panel and Fantastico scripts - frankly, my only advice is to change to one that does!)

2. Select Fantastico from the control panel

3. Select either Wordpress or Joomla from the menu on the left.

4. Install Wordpress or Joomla in the root folder. You will have to select an administrator username and password to access the admin side of your site.

Log into the admin backend (normally /wp-admin for Wordpress and /administrator for Joomla). There are lots of free Wordpress tutorials available - just do a Google search for 'free Wordpress tutorials' and to get started in Joomla, do a search for 'how to use Joomla'.

To change the look and feel of your Wordpress or Joomla website is really easy! You simply install a new template. Wordpress and Joomla templates are specific to these tools (you cannot use any templates). For a guide to where to find the best free Wordpress and Joomla templates you can take a look at these resources:
http://www.tm4y.co.za/joomla-tips/best-joomla-templates.html
and
http://www.tm4y.co.za/wordpress-tips/wordpress-templates.html

I hope that these tips will help you on your way to creating your own website - web design the easy way!

Christine Anderssen is the owner of Tailormade4you Web Design where she makes use of Joomla and Wordpress to build websites. While making extensive use of of templates to shortcut the design process she also designs websites from scratch. Visitors just glance at each and every new webpage; they normally scan some text and just get on to the first link that takes their attention or interest. So, here comes the importance of interactive web design in the picture. A professional website design agency should think from the point of view of end user of website ie visitors. In reality, there are many parts of the page which they don't prefer to even look at.

Do not make visitors think

The web page should be explanatory and obvious. So when you are making a new website, your work is to get free from all the questions, therefore the users require to make deliberately, considering the pros and cons and other alternatives. If the number of questions grows in users mind, then it would become difficult for the user to understand the complete system and the visitor would not be able to move from one point to another point.

Do not test the patience of visitors

Let the user discover your website and explore your services. Also it is not recommendable to actually force user to enter the email address just to test different features. For the first time user, they would prefer to play with services rather than completing long forms.

Focus on the visitor's attention

Focusing on the visitor's attention on certain areas would actually help the visitors to move from one point to the other point. The less questions visitors would find more trust they would be able to find in your company. Basically the more they will think they will get more confused.

Construct effective writing

As we know that the Web is entirely different from the print, therefore it is essential to alter the writing style. Promotional writing would not be read at all. All the long text without the images and the keywords marked in italics or bold would be skipped. Also the exaggeration in the language needs to be ignored. Use concise and short phrases.

Try for simplicity

The main motive of the site is to keep it simple; visitors do not go on the site to enjoy the design. Therefore try for simplicity rather than going into the complexity.

Author has vast experience in the professional website design. He is currently associated with the Ideaz Inc - A premier full service Interactive web design agency in India.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Surinder_Sharma

Web Designing Skills You Must Have!

Web designers and web developers often work closely with each other. In order to pursue a career in web designing or as a web developer, you need to possess a large number of skills. After all, you must have an edge over the rest of the crowd who also want to become a part of the booming web design industry.

Skills Required

Before we get into the technical side of things, let's start with the basic skills you must posses in order to be a web designer. You need to be extremely observant and should have an eye for detail.

As a web designer, you must pay close attention to the nitty-gritty of your job. Moreover, you need to know what goes where and how things should be arranged so as to most appeal to the browsers and the customer base your client is targeting.

A strong aesthetic sense is also called for. Let's face it, a web designer's job is to efficiently design a web site so that it conveys all the information that it is required to, while at the same time being attractive and eye-catching.

No one wants to read pages and pages of information! If they needed to, they could just go to Wikipedia! You need to make your web page look good and for that you need to have a strong aesthetic sense.

Now, moving on to the more pressing, technical aspect of things as a web designer! You need to posses a thorough knowledge of XHTML and HTML technology. This is the basic language of the internet and if you don't know the basic language, how will you manage to converse? Though this consists of the basics of web designing, it is the most invaluable aspect of it. Just knowing this language itself enables you to develop simple websites!

CSS is the next step. This is a more advanced program than HTML but it is an amazing tool. CSS is an abbreviation for cascading style sheets. With thorough knowledge of this language, you can give your web page makeovers any time! If you design a web page to look a certain way and with the simple operation required to change a style sheet, you can make it look totally different!

Javascript and Ajax is something that web designers need to get comfortable with. Javascript is the basic interactive element of a web site so, quite obviously, as a good web developer, you need to master it.

Once you understand the relation between javascript and the website you're working on, your task becomes much easier. Other languages and platforms you need to get comfortable with include C++, PERL, ASP etc. For animation and graphics, learning Flash is also quite helpful.

An essential part of the job description is learning and maintaining a proper database, therefore, a complete course in MySQL is highly recommended. SQL is another database which you can learn along with MS Access.

Search Engine optimization is also part of the job description of a web designer. In today's competitive market, where would we be without Search Engine optimization? Web designers require a variety of skills; these are just a few of them! The sky is the limit when it comes to web designing!

EZA - Susan Bean

Get all the facts about the typical web design salary. Even though predominately a marketing term, some of the key imputes colligated with Web 2.0 include the emergence of social networks, two-way communication, various 'glue' techniques and substantial multifariousness in content types. Although most of Web 2.0 runs on the same platform as 1.0, there are some key divergences. Our aim is to key out the elementary differences leading to the properties of interest in 2.0 to be characterized.

Web 2.0 enamours a combination of conceptions on the Web in recent years. The accurate definition is subtle and it is hard to categorize with the binary label "Web 1.0" or "Web 2.0". But there is an uncluttered separation between a set of extremely popular Web 2.0 sites such as Facebook and YouTube, and the old Web. These separations are seeable when contrived onto a variety of axes, such as technological structural and sociological.

One of the major differences between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 is that the content creators were very few in Web 1.0 with the sheer majority of users merely served as consumers of content, while any user can be a content generator in Web 2.0 and various technological assistances have been added to increase the potential for content generation.

Another difference between Web 2.0 and Web 1.0 can be based on time. The term "Web 2.0" was coined around 2004 and many of the first genuine Web 2.0 sites started egressing in late 2003 and early 2004. The websites which have modified a little in structure since the early 2000's and before may be counted as Web 1.0 (such as IMDB).

A key feature in Web 2.0 is that these sites boost users to expend as much time as possible on their site. They offer strong inducements for increasing stickiness on the site. In Web 1.0 most websites have links to external sites and users can easily follow those links to other sites. The primary reason for this is that most of the Web 1.0 sites incline to cover a single topic and do not necessitate users to log in to access them. On the other hand, Web 2.0 sites encourage intra-site activities, usually requiring users to log in and build links to others on the site.

Web 1.0 sites were for one-way communication while Web 2.0 sites build two-way communication medium. Web 1.0 was autocratic and top-down. On the other hand, Web 2.0 is democratic and bottom-up. Rather than the New York Times 1.0 website stating you what the significant stories of the day were, Digg.com, Buzz and Yahoo.com depicts the stories users have voted the most crucial.

Web 1.0 sites were plainly to be read passively. Web 2.0 sites tempt participation, voting for the content up or down, grading it, remarking on it, and submitting new posts. By 2000, Amazon.com was allowing users to review books but nowadays users can take part in many different ways like create lists of products, write product guides and edit wiki articles (Amapedia). In 2000, Amazon was utilizing its sites to sell products it bought in. With Web 2.0, Amazon now lets you list and sell your own new and old books and products through their website.

Web 1.0 sites were static and seldom gets changed where Web 2.0 sites are dynamic and change hourly or even more frequently, pondering all of those user shares.
